Seismic retrofitting of existing structures using steel-based solutions

Monday, November 23, 2015, 10:00 – 16:45

Timișoara, România

Workshop aim

Many existing buildings are in need of a seismic retrofit. Steel based intervention techniques can often be more efficient and economic, their possibilities are practically unknown and their application has been limited to a few particular cases. The workshop will disseminate selected steel solutions for the seismic retrofit of existing buildings, furnishing design and construction methodologies, tools for dimensioning of elements and connections on performance-based criteria.

Workshop program

10.00 – 10.15: Welcome introduction- Dan Dubină (UP Timișoara)

10:15 – 11:15: Overview of the STEEL-EARTH project - Dan Dubină

11:15 – 11:45: Coffee break

11:45 – 13:00: Performance based evaluation of structures in view of their consolidation - Adrian Dogariu (UP Timișoara)

13:00 – 14:00: Lunch

14:00 – 15:00: Design criteria and practical aspects of steel bracing systems: optimal distribution of bracings and foundations micro-piles - Rosario Gigliotti (University of Roma, Italy)

15:00 – 15:30: Coffee break

15:30 – 16:30: Strengthening of existing reinforces concrete frames with buckling-restrained braces: General presentation, Study case - Aurel Stratan (UP Timișoara)

16:30 – 16:45: Free discussion and conclusions, Dan Dubină

The workshop is based on the results of three RFCS research projects:

Optimizing the seismic performance of steel and steel-concrete structures by standardizing material quality control (OPUS),

Prefabricated steel structures for low-rise buildings in seismic areas (PRECASTEEL)

Steel solutions for seismic retrofit and upgrade of existing constructions (STEELRETRO)

Architects, engineers, decision makers, technicians of construction companies and public administrations, operators of the construction sector, steel producers, steel fabricators, students and academics are welcome.
